Sciatica Symptoms

While some experience sciatica pain as sever and weakening, others experience infrequent and irritating pain that has the potential to get worse. Generally, sciatica only affects one side of the lower body. Sciatica pain will often start at the lower back, and can be felt down the back of the thigh and down through the leg. Depending on where the sciatic nerve is affected, pain and other symptoms may spread to the foot or toes.

Sciatica symptoms that may be experience include:

  • A constant pain on one side of the rear
  • A shooting pain that makes it difficult to stand up
  • Burning or tingling down the leg
  • Pain the rear or leg that is worse when sitting
  • Weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving the leg or foot

Low back pain may be present along with the leg pain, but generally the lower back pain is less severe than the leg pain. Symptoms start to occur when the large sciatic nerve is irritated. Being the largest single nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve is composed of individual nerve roots that start branching out from the spine in the lower back, and combine to form the "sciatic nerve".

Sciatica symptoms (leg pain, numbness, lower back pain, weakness, tingling) are different depending on where the pressure occurs on the nerve.
